Before every commit, it pays to look at what you're about to save: which files changed, which lines, and which of those changes are actually going into the commit. Two Git commands answer all of that. This guide makes a small change in a .NET C# project and walks through git status and git diff with their real output, including the one surprise that confuses almost everyone: git diff showing nothing after git add.

Fixed: Git Shows Every Line Changed in Files from dotnet new (CRLF Line Endings)

I changed four lines of a .NET project file, and Git reported 32. The ASP.NET Core Web API template creates its files with Windows line endings (CRLF), even on a Mac, while the dotnet commands that later edit a file save it with LF. To Git, every line of such a file looked different. One .gitattributes file, as Git's own documentation describes, stores every text file with LF and ends the noise.

Seeing Permission denied (publickey) when connecting to GitHub means GitHub could not authenticate your SSH connection with any key your computer offered. The usual causes are an unloaded key, an incorrect remote URL, a key attached to another GitHub account, or an SSH configuration problem.

This guide checks each cause in the fastest order so you can get git clone, git pull, and git push working again.
